Transfiguration
There are undeniable truths of human existence that we all experience: we take our first breath and live for a finite amount of time, and then we will take our last. Where we transition is dependent upon our religious and cultural beliefs. The one aspect of our lives that we do have control over is how we live it, and thus, it should be our ultimate goal to strive for a life well lived.

Transfiguration is intended to depict one's transition from this life. The body returns to the earth, while the essence of who we are—including our character, values, and beliefs— remains in this life. The soul, the spiritual aspect of a human being, believed to transcend one's body, ascends as it is transfigured from this life. It is with faith and hope that we will transition in a way that is beautiful, peaceful, and welcoming, in accordance with our beliefs. Even if one does not believe in an afterlife, our essence remains in how we affect the lives of others, and even by our existence and presence alone. It is up to each of us to strive for a life well lived: a life that is fulfilling, meaningful, and purposeful, in which we appreciate our own existence, look for the best in others, contribute the best of ourselves, and leave the world a better place.

Introspection
Stainless steel kinetic installation
57 1/2" x 22" x 18 1/2"
2024
In Introspection, a heavy, rigid metal form appears lightweight and fluid. The repeated pattern of the asymmetrical, twisting metal surface is reflected onto its surroundings as a pattern of light, which moves as the suspended form rotates. One can additionally find their own fragmented reflection within the revolving form. However, it is important that we each take time to look beyond simply our reflection and contemplate our lives. Just as the metal reflects light onto its surroundings, we affect others by our existence and presence. Understanding that we are not alone in this life, we each have a choice to make our connections beyond ourselves positive and meaningful.

You Can't Take It With You
Mixed media assemblage
23 1/2" x 76" x 27 1/2"
2024
You Can't Take It With You is intended to literally portray, through found objects, the idea that we cannot take our material possessions with us as we transition from this life. Sprawled out across the black base is an assemblage of material items in monochromatic black, arranged to appear as if someone is preparing to pack. Beside these objects is an open, empty large leather suitcase, inside of which is a small double-bell alarm clock that is meant to symbolize the passage of time and mortality. Time is precious, and with the limited time that we each have in this life, it is crucial that we prioritize what is truly important.

Awaken
Mixed media assemblage with light
58 1/2" x 17 1/4" x 21 1/2"
2022-2023
Awaken is meant to communicate one's personal well-being as the foundation of a life well lived. A knotted rope guides viewers on an ascent through a series of defined realms, each with found objects that symbolize personal conflict and struggle. The top tier comprises an enclosure of black metal escutcheons, from which light breaks through keyholes and cracks. Whatever our personal circumstances and belief system may be, a life well lived begins with ourselves. Our own faith and determination can instill in each of us the strength to survive and overcome our struggles, in the hope that our light will continue to shine into a new day.

Prevail
Mixed media assemblage with light on canvas
52 1/2" x 35 1/4" x 11"
2023
In Prevail, a dark, unsettling space is produced through several layers of obstructive, intertwining, man-made physical barriers. This seemingly impenetrable environment transforms as light breaks through cracks, keyholes, and other openings. Societal barriers—such as inequality, discrimination, and violence—tend to hold people back both physically and spiritually. However, we do not necessarily need to perform some monumental act to make a meaningful difference in our world. Conducting just small acts of kindness and treating people respectfully and equally can enable us to b a positive light for others and make our own contributions to a better world.

Hallelujah
Mixed media on glass
34 1/2" x 26" x 8 1/4"
2024
Dedicated to the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell
Hallelujah is titled after an exclamation of Hebrew origin, which in English means, "Praise God." A pair of wing-like forms wrap around an atmosphere of color, with their circular motion and ascension designed to lift viewers viscerally. We often tend to focus on the struggles that we each face and the conflicts in our world, but it is imperative that we additionally understand and appreciate how wonderful life is. There is a special beauty in lifting ourselves physically and spiritually as we acknowledge the presence of a higher power with pure love and celebrate the life given to each of us with joyous praise and gratitude.

Unconditional Love
Silk, wire, and light
39" x 48 1/4" x 16 1/2"
2024
Dedicated to Sue Fernandez
Unconditional Love is intended to capture a tender, intimate moment between mother and child. However, this work is also open to interpretation as symbolic of any type of special bond. Many of us share a loving bond with a parent, sibling, or other family member, a spouse, a partner, a close friend, or a higher power. It is important that we value and cherish our positive connections with others. Our pursuit of a life well lived is not just a separate, individual effort, but also one that is intertwined with others' life experiences as we find purpose and meaning through the connections and bonds that we share.

Indomitable Spirit
Mixed media
46" x 23 1/2" x 19 1/2"
2023
Dedicated to Scot Ryersson and Michael Yaccarino
Indomitable Spirit is inspired by our quality of persevering in spite of the challenges that we each face. Simplicity of strength and being is evoked through the inner structure of metal fencing and the opaque, monochromatic quality of the exterior and interior space. The form's large scale amplifies its organic yet solid structure, establishing a powerful presence. Tapping into the strength of the human spirit during times of struggle can empower us to sustain our faith and hope, for ourselves and others.

Prayer for Peace
Mixed media assemblage with light on canvas
100 1/4" x 36" x 4 1/2"
2024
Dedicated to the Sisters of St. Dominic of Caldwell
Prayer for Peace is intended to symbolize the conflict of division, violence, and destruction in our global contemporary moment, which can challenge our faith. Oftentimes, the belief that we can make a difference in our world is aligned with the act of prayer, which can be used as a source of strength. Transcendent of religion, ethnicity, political affiliation, and all other demographic qualifiers, prayer is the language of humanity. Even during the darkest of times, we must continue to have belief and faith, as it is with hope that goodness will always prevail.
